Here is a new forum for discussion of home security and safety.

I have a long way to go myself in securing my home, but here are a few of the steps I have taken:

-- monitored, professional burglar alarm system, with battery backup
-- keyed "outside" lock on master bedroom door
-- always carry in the home, to avoid being caught away from my defense tools
-- smoke alarms with battery backup
-- secure firearm storage (safe)

The next step I want to take is reinforcing all my exterior doors, in some way. I have seen some products for this, not sure how I want to proceed yet.

Another, much less expensive, alternative would simply be to install heavy duty striker plates that have 4 long screws instead of two short ones.

What have you done to secure your home? what do you plan to do in the future?

With the economy bad and getting worse, higher crime rates may be next...?

I know what you mean, Jed! I was in the US Army Infantry, and those trip wire "screamers" were a lot of fun... not sure what they were really called, but when you hook them up to the trip wire and it gets tripped, it would whistle really loud until it burned out.

I am with you on the money thing, too. That's why I haven't purchased the door reinforcements for my home - yet. I may just go with the more cost-effective items, like the heavy duty striker plates with four long screws instead of two short ones. Those can be had for about $5 each - or less.

Anybody else got any ideas? Inexpensive ones are our favorites. Smile

Sounds like when I was in the Navy.

I can neither confirm nor deny that my ship carries nuclear weapons.

Those suckers do some serious damage...! I can definitely and honestly state that there are no weapons of mass destruction - nuclear or otherwise - on my ship. But any targets that present a threat to life, limb, friends or family that are susceptible to small arms fire are forewarned - Don't Tread on Me!

By 'small arms', I am of course referring to my collection that ranges from .22LR on the lower end to .30-06 and 7.62x54 on the upper end. Don't have anything any bigger than that. I have enough 7.62x39 to make a stand, though.

some of the traps that I can make will not cause serous injury unleas I want them to and that just requires adding 2 things but I do like the flairs it gives a signal to were they are and it will scare the crap out of someone to.As far as making a stand from inside your house Yes it can be done but you gata put some thought into it first Like most houses are made of wood and siding every thing I have can shoot through that you need to have a sheald for protection and some houses have a brick wall witch is better but it does fail . Always have a way out if needed and the back door is not always an option. You can go into your closet and make a door to under your house and when doing this fix it to were when you go out its not noticed loke puting boxes fasened to the door so when its closed all looks normal and have a lock inside it there is a chance it will be found . OK im done talking now said enough Wink
