Post First IDPA match using CZ75 BD Reply with quote
Tonight I had my first match using my CZ75 BD. I had been using my CZ PCR, but several weeks ago my wife talked me into switching to the CZ75 BD since I was practicing for the Carolina Cup, my first major IDPA match. I've just done local matches up to this point. Tonight was the last local match before the Carolina Cup, and the CZ75 BD was awesome! The pistol did better than I did, but I did manage to come in 15th overall out of 37 competitors. It was a pretty strong field for our local match, since several strong shooters were there to 'tune up' for the Carolina Cup who don't usually shoot in our local matches.

I am looking forward to the Carolina Cup, it should be a lot of fun. The match runs Thursday, Friday, Saturday, June 18-20. I am doing all 16 stages on Thursday, June 18. I'll post again in after the match is over and let you know how I do. I'm not expecting to do well in a major match, but it should be a lot of fun. As long as I don't come in dead last in my division and class (SSP/Sharpshooter), I'll be happy.

If you haven't tried competition, you really should. It's great practice, good training and it's FUN! It's not about winning - I've never won or even finished in the top 10, even in the local matches. You meet great people, have fun and sharpen your skills. It's all good!

There are several great ways to go:

-- IDPA
-- IPSC/UPSSA
-- GSSF (for Glock owners only)

All that's required to get started is a pistol, a holster, eye and ear protection, a holster, mag pouch, three or more good magazines and ammo. Most of us already have most of those items.

Give it a try!

Seems your doing well, good on you. Good luck at the Carolina Cup and let us know how you do.

BTW, is the Carolina Cup held near you, or is there travel and hotels involved?

Thanks! The Carolina Cup is being held in Oxford, NC which is just a little more than an hour from where I live. So I'll be commuting, no overnights.

Wow! I just got back from shooting the sixteen stages of the 2009 Carolina Cup and I have to say - that is about as much fun as I can have with my clothes on! Smile

We had scenarios where we were shooting out of car windows, underneath a van!, a stage that simulated a "charging bear, where the first target was out at 30 yds, and the targets were placed closer at intervals until the closest target required a head shot. Other scenarios included working at a cash register and getting 'robbed', and being a customer at a convenience store where a gang has three robbers staked out inside the store and three more come in the door.

All in all, a great match, great range officers, GREAT FUN! It was my first IDPA match that counts as a "national match". I can't wait to do more! I won't know how I placed until Saturday evening, because while I chose to do all 16 stages today, but other shooters will be shooting their matches on Friday and Saturday. But I already know I didn't come in at the very bottom of my class and division (Stock Service Pistol/Sharpshooter) so that was all I really hoped to accomplish in my first major match.

I know I've said it before, but I highly recommend IDPA to everybody that enjoys shooting and wants to have fun and sharpen their self-defense shooting skills at the same time.

Special thanks from me to all those who do all the hard work to put on the IDPA matches!

Hmmm, just took my 9mm out today, and with the Crimson Trace Laser Grips I was punching some serious bulls eye holes.

Of course, it wasn't in competition, where I could not use it, and would probably suck with the pressure.

Hey - whatever works! Was this the High Power you were shooting? Those are sweet guns - if I'm not mistaken, I think they are the design my CZ75 is based on....?

So the guys in the revolver category would shoot less?

Also, is their a specific 9mm ammo that you are required to use in your CZ75 BD, i.e... 115, 124 or 147 grain...

I assume it's all FMJ.

No, everyone shoots approximately the same number of rounds - including revolver shooters. I say approximately, because some of the stages specify a limited number of rounds and some do not. On the ones that do not, if you feel you have made a bad shot, you can take "make up" shots. There is no penalty for this except the additional time it adds, giving you a higher score. Like golf, low score wins. On limited round stages, there is a penalty if you take more than the exact number of shots required to complete the course of fire.

Revolver shooters just have to do more reloads, since they are limited to six rounds per reload. Each stage has an 18-round limit, to prevent any competitor - including revolvers - to have to do more than two reloads on any given stage.

There is no specific type of ammo required, you can even use hollow points if you like - but it would be a huge waste of money! The only limitation I am aware of in the rules for ammo is that no steel core or armor piercing ammo is allowed. This is to prevent damage to steel targets, like pepper poppers. Frangible or lightweight ammo isn't illegal, but it wouldn't make sense because it would make it harder for you to knock down steel targets. Also because of the need to knock down steel targets, the minimum calibers allowed are 9mm and 38 Special. Any higher calibers are fine, but it's rare to see anyone using anything more powerful than .45ACP and occasionally .357Sig.

Thanks for that synopsis. I agree using hollow points wouldn't be financially sound, though I suppose if someone felt they shot better with them and had the money to burn...
